Sciatica Q & A

What is sciatica?

Sciatica refers to back and leg pain along the length of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve runs from your lower back down through the buttocks and into the legs.

When an illness or injury irritates the sciatic nerve, it can cause:

  • Sharp, achy, or jolting pain in the back or down the back of the legs
  • Burning or tingling sensations
  • Numbness in one leg

More severe complications include loss of bladder or bowel control and weakened legs.

What causes sciatica?

Nerve compression causes sciatica. It's typically the result of one of the following conditions:

  • Herniated or bulging disc
  • Bone spur, or bone overgrowth on the spine
  • Spinal stenosis, or narrowing of the spinal canal
  • Pregnancy
  • Inflammation of a muscle sprain or strain
  • Tumor
  • Diabetic nerve damage

The above conditions result from congenital disabilities, injury, or the normal aging process.

When should I see a chiropractor for sciatica?

Your primary care provider may suggest chiropractic care for sciatica, but you can consult with Dr. Carollo or Dr. Bilitsis any time you have back pain. If your back pain doesn’t go away on its own after a few days, the chiropractors provide diagnostic testing and treatment.

If you want to skip conventional approaches to sciatica, such as steroid injections and medications, you can visit Prestige for chiropractic care.

If you exhibit more serious side effects, such as paralysis or loss of bladder control, you should seek emergency medical attention.

How do you treat sciatica?

Dr. Carollo and Dr. Bilitsis use spinal adjustments to restore spinal alignment and increase spinal flexibility. Spinal manipulations provide safe, effective relief from sciatica for many people.

In conjunction with spinal adjustments, your chiropractor may use ice/heat therapy and myofascial techniques to control the pain. He may also incorporate transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) and ultrasound heat to moderate pain and reduce muscle spasms.

If you suspect or have been diagnosed with sciatica, contact Prestige Chiropractic and Rehabilitation online or over the phone to arrange your initial consultation.
