Hand Pain Q & A

What causes hand pain?

Injury, disease, and repetitive activity all can lead to hand and wrist pain. Some of the most common conditions that cause hand pain include:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Pinched nerve
  • Arthritis
  • Peripheral neuropathy
  • Tendonitis
  • Wrist fractures
  • Sprains and strains
  • Trigger finger

When should I see a chiropractor?

If any of the following situations apply to you, you should see Dr. Carollo or Dr. Bilitsis:

  • You’d like to avoid surgery
  • You have a hard time twisting or gripping objects with your hands
  • You’ve tried other treatments and haven’t gotten relief
  • The weakness, pain, tingling, or numbness in your hands bothers you
  • Your symptoms don’t go away on their own after several days
  • A non-life-threatening injury caused your wrist or hand pain

How do you diagnose hand pain?

To diagnose the underlying cause of your hand pain, Dr. Bilitsis and Dr. Carollo perform a physical exam and ask questions about your health history. Many times a physical exam is enough to form a diagnosis, but your chiropractor may order further testing, such as imaging tests and electrodiagnostics, to confirm his diagnosis.

Imaging tests

Imaging tests such as X-rays and MRIs reveal fractures and signs of arthritis. For example, narrowing of the joint space between the bones could indicate arthritis.

Using nerve conduction studies and electromyogram, your chiropractor can detect the location and extent of nerve damage. These tests measure electrical activity along the nerves or between nerves and muscles. Dr. Bilitsis and Dr. Carollo use electrodiagnostics to detect pinched nerves and carpal tunnel syndrome.

Ultrasounds allow your chiropractor to detect the tendon thickening characteristic of tendonitis.

How do you treat hand pain?

Dr. Bilitsis and Dr. Carollo use a variety of techniques to treat hand and wrist pain. For instance, they offer spinal adjustments to fix misalignments, restore range of motion, and reduce inflammation. Among the treatments they offer are:

  • Splints and braces to immobilize the wrist and hold it in proper alignment
  • Trigger point therapy to deactivate tight muscles
  • Exercises and stretches to improve mechanics
  • Ultrasound therapy to reduce tension
